Lone Peak
On May 11th 2011 Tony Pavlantos and I got to ride of the East face of Lone Peak in Utah’s Wasatch. Earlier in March we had done a camping trip to scope out the lines on the East face, and were excited to reap the rewards of our efforts. We started our day trip in the city of Alpine south of SLC Utah. We started walking at about 3:00 am around 5,500 feet elevation. The first 2,000 ft of hiking was in the dirt below snow-line, on mostly South facing terrain. We were happy to get the boards off our backs when we reached snow at about 7,500 ft. The skinning was nice on the frozen snow up a trail. About three quarters of the way up the mountain the sun began to light up the valley and surrounding mountains. Up in the alpine a few steep sections made you work for your traction on the firm snow. The last 800 feet was easy skinning on windblown powder. We were close to the top about 8:30 am and decided to save the summit for another day because the East face was warming and we wanted to ride it before the snow took on much more heat from the sun. We rode the lookers left couloir off the east face. It was steep and the snow was nice about 4 to 6 inches of pow. The new snow sluff was running fast on the melt freeze crust underneath. The snowpack here in the Wasatch is at 200% , way above normal for this time of year, and is providing some good times and experiences. Our whole Lone Peak Tour was 8 miles, 11 hours and over 6000 feet of hiking hitting 50 degree slope angles in the couloir.
